Sweden’s largest university hospital – investing heavily in future healthcare

Sahlgrenska University Hospital is Sweden’s largest hospital and one of the largest university hospitals in Europe. We are aiming high, to become Europe's leading university hospital by 2032. Sahlgrenska University Hospital is located in West Sweden, a vibrant region and home to an innovation cluster for health.

Since we have been around for 250 years, we carry a lot of groundbreaking history with us and are now investing heavily in future healthcare. We have an AI Center and an Innovation Department and offer a unique fellowship in Innovation and Technology.

Take the chance to transform the care together with us

At the departments responsible for internal medicine and geriatrics and  at two different hospital sites, which will be your home-base facilities during the program, we are always keen to try new ways of working, to improve healthcare outcomes. Research and development is the very core of what we do and we have a long tradition of both national and international collaborations.

One of the major challenges within healthcare today is the growing ageing population. In recent years, Sahlgrenska University Hospital has made several investments in improving the care for frail elderly patients. Such as introducing mobile teams that follow up patients who have been discharged from the emergency department or the care wards as well as other Hospital at Home solutions and AI-tools to prevent falls.

The departments provide highly specialized care to acutely ill patients that suffer from e.g. diabetes, venous thrombosis, blood diseases, heart diseases, strokes and gastrointestinal diseases. In addition to emergency departments, we are responsible for several care wards and specialized outpatient clinics. In the Geriatrics field we also work as consultants to support other departments in adapting their care with regard to the elderly.

Unparalleled learning experience

The Residency Program in Internal Medicine and Geriatrics offers one of the best learning environments in Sweden, with an excellent support system from supervisors and other colleagues.

During the residency you will get the opportunity to get an insight into the entire spectrum of the internal medicine and geriatrics medical field. The residency includes clinical work under supervision in inpatient settings, outpatient follow-up and shifts at the emergency ward.

We work in multidisciplinary teams across Sahlgrenska University Hospital’s three sites (Östra, Mölndal & Sahlgrenska). The Department of Medicine, Geriatrics and Emergency (Östra) and the Department of Emergency Medicine and Geriatrics (Sahlgrenska) are responsible for the Combined Internal Medicine and Geriatrics Residency Program. You will also frequently collaborate with other departments as well as be a part of our mobile team working with different Hospital At Home solutions.

During the training you will have an appointed supervisor who will support you throughout the program. Together you will regularly evaluate the progress made. There will be frequent lectures and meetings for the group of residents in the clinic during which residents are expected to participate, exchange and present ideas as well as review new research. The clinic emphasises research and each resident will have to conduct their own research project during their training.

The clinical part of the combined training program spans over 5,5 + 2,5 years. You will be a part of the on-call team, out-patient service and assist in the emergency department. Alongside the rotations and clinical duties (40 hours per week), you will continuously need to study key literature.
