Psychosis care at Sahlgrenska University Hospital

The Department of Psychotic Disorders is the part of the Sahlgrenska University Hospital that deals with psychosis. We are responsible for the treatment of persons with schizophrenia and similar conditions who live in Gothenburg, Mölndal and the municipalities of Partille and Härryda. For the time being we have slightly more than 2600 patients and about 400 employees.

The department encompasses four wards and nine outpatient units. Three of these offer integrated inpatient and outpatient care. This means that at these units there are beds that can be used when only outpatient care is not enough. One outpatient unit specializes in work-related rehabilitation according to the program Individual Placement and Support (IPS).

Research issues and some issues pertaining to development are dealt with at a competence centre, the Competence Centre for Schizophrenia (KSC). The task of this centre is to support and coordinate R&D projects within the department, everything from planning to implementation, documentation and dissemination of the results.

Our objective is to offer modern methods of treatment, methods that are supported by extensive research. A prerequisite of the treatment is a well working collaboration between the patient, the relatives, the social services of the municipality and other parties.

The department uses the types of interventions that are recommended in the National Guidelines for Psychosocial Interventions for Schizophrenia or Schizophrenia-type Conditions from the National Board of Health and Welfare. The care work is performed according to the model Integrated Psychiatry. A Guarantee Certificate for the department has been formulated. It stipulates the patient’s right to, what we call, joint decision making.
