About our research
Sahlgrenska University Hospital conducts research across a broad range of disciplines and at the highest international standards. We advance healthcare through clinical research and innovation, working closely with academia, industry and patients to develop new knowledge, treatments and methods of care.
Together with Region Västra Götaland and the Sahlgrenska Academy at University of Gothenburg, Sahlgrenska University Hospital was ranked highest in Sweden for clinical research in the Swedish Research Council’s most recent evaluation of clinical research quality across the country’s seven regions with university hospitals.
Research is an important part of the university hospital’s mission and a potential career pathway for many healthcare professionals. The evidence-based medicine and the highly specialised care provided today is based on research conducted and implemented by our staff. Through close collaboration with academic and industrial partners, new solutions are continuously developed to meet the healthcare challenges of today and tomorrow.
Clinical innovation at Sahlgrenska University Hospital has led to medical advances with both national and international impact. One prominent example is the Sahlgrenska University hospital’s pioneering work in uterus transplantation and led the world’s first translational study addressing absolute uterine factor infertility and, in 2014, achieved the world’s first birth following a uterus transplant.
Another landmark achievement dates to the 1970s and 1980s, when staff at Sahlgrenska University Hospital played a key role in the development of the ulcer medication Losec. The treatment transformed stomach ulcers from a common and often serious condition into one that could be effectively managed. Regarded as one of the major medical breakthroughs of the twentieth century, Losec has generated approximately €32 billion in global sales since its launch in 1988.
Building Clinical Academic Careers
Sahlgrenska University Hospital offers structured opportunities for all healthcare professions to combine clinical practice with research at every stage of an academic career. In collaboration with the Sahlgrenska Academy at the University of Gothenburg, we have established academic career pathways that enable healthcare professionals to integrate clinical work with research throughout their careers.
Our initiatives include tryout research months, research internships, research training positions, protected research time, and support for academic progression from doctoral studies to associate professor and professor. By recognising research achievements in career development and providing long-term support, we create sustainable clinical academic careers that strengthen innovation, education, and ultimately improve patient care.
