Regional Cancer Therapies

Regional cancer therapies, such as Isolated Limb Perfusion, ILP, and Percutaneous Hepatic Perfusion, PHP, are important options in the management of malignant disease. These therapies deliver high doses of chemotherapy directly to a specific organ or region of the body.

Sahlgrenska University Hospital is one of the few centres in Europe with extensive experience in ILP and PHP. Professor Roger Olofsson Bagge at Sahlgrenska University Hospital is one of the leading international experts in regional cancer therapies, and has played a central role in the clinical development, implementation, and evaluation of these treatments for patients with advanced tumors.

If a patient has a tumor, usually skin cancer (melanoma) or a soft tissue tumor (sarcoma) in the arm or in the leg and it cannot be treated with common surgery techniques, then ILP is the method that offers the best possibilities to remove the cancer.

The highly specialized ILP treatment is used for advanced tumors by temporarily isolating the blood circulation of the affected limb and administering very high doses of chemotherapy directly to the tumor site. In about 65 percent of the patients, the cancer is completely removed. However, there is a risk that the cancer might come back after several years, but in these cases the patient can repeat the treatment.

Sahlgrenska University Hospital is one of the world's most experienced centers for ILP. We perform approximately 30 procedures each year and receives patients from across Sweden, the Nordic countries and the rest of the world. The hospital has provided ILP since the 80’s and recently reached an important milestone, treating its 1,000th patient.

The access to the new hybrid operating theatre at the Centre for Imaging and Intervention (BoIC) has enabled the development of a world unique, minimally invasive isolated limb perfusion (MI-ILP).
