Four-year-old Hilda is preparing for surgery to correct a heart condition at Queen Silvia Children’s Hospital. For her parents, Christina and Miquel, it is an emotional time, but one marked by support, preparation and a strong focus on their daughter’s needs.

The day before surgery is filled with examinations and preparations, all carried out at Hilda’s pace, with time for play and breaks. Using pictures and child-friendly educational tools, staff help her understand what will happen, while her parents receive information and support throughout the process.

“We felt reassured every step of the way,” says Miquel.

On the day of surgery, Hilda is cared for by a highly experienced team specialising in paediatric cardiac surgery. To make the experience less intimidating, she drives a small toy car to the operating theatre.

Following a long and complex procedure, the news is positive: the operation has been successful.

After surgery, Hilda receives care in the intensive care unit, where advanced medical treatment is combined with support for the whole family. During her recovery, play therapy helps her regain strength and confidence.

Twelve days later, Hilda returns home.

“She’s full of energy again,” says Christina. “It’s hard to believe she has been through something so major.”
