We want you to feel well cared for and safe during your stay with us. Find general information to help you before and during your stay at the hospital.

For more than four decades, we have cared for patients with intestinal failure and since 1998 we have run an intestinal and multivisceral transplant program. Today, we are recognized as a leading center for the treatment of these rare and highly specialized conditions.

Intestinal failure occurs when the bowel can no longer absorb enough nutrients and fluids to maintain health and growth. In these situations, patients depend on intravenous nutritional support, known as parenteral nutrition (PN), to survive and thrive. While PN has transformed the outlook for many people with intestinal failure, long-term treatment can be demanding and may affect daily life, independence and overall wellbeing. Some patients experience serious complications, including bloodstream infections, thrombosis, liver disease and recurrent dehydration. In a minority of individuals, intestinal failure progresses despite optimal medical treatment, or complications related to long-term PN become life-threatening. In these cases, intestinal transplantation, combined liver and intestinal transplantation or multivisceral transplantation, may offer the most effective treatment option.

Sahlgrenska University Hospital has extensive experience in both intestinal failure management, reconstructive surgery, and intestinal/multivisceral transplantation. Our teams combine clinical expertise with an active research programme focused on improving treatment, reducing complications and enhancing long-term outcomes. Specialists in clinical nutrition, gastroenterology, colorectal surgery and transplant surgery work closely together to ensure coordinated care for both adult and pediatric patients. We serve as tertiary referral center for intestinal/multivisceral transplantation and evaluation of intestinal failure for Sweden, the Nordic countries and Estonia. We are an active part in the Scandiatransplant collaboration and maintain a close collaboration with several international partners.

Patients benefit from a highly coordinated approach, with regular multidisciplinary clinics and case conferences that bring together specialists from across disciplines. This collaborative model ensures that every patient receives personalised care tailored to their individual needs and circumstances. Through continuous innovation and international collaboration, we strive to advance care for patients with complex intestinal diseases.

By combining specialized expertise, advanced treatment options and long-term support, we aim to help patients and their families achieve the best possible health, independence and quality of life.

The collaboration that saved Eldur’s life

International collborations give patients access to treatments not available in their home countries. For Eldur Elí Bjarkason from Iceland, this meant a life-saving liver transplant.
