Sahlgrenska University Hospital is entering a new era of development with Sahlgrenska Life, the largest ongoing life science initiative in the Nordic region. This long-term collaboration between the hospital, Region Västra Götaland and the University of Gothenburg will create a world-leading environment where healthcare, research, education and innovation come together to improve patient care and accelerate medical breakthroughs.
Scheduled for completion in 2033, Sahlgrenska Life comprises three new buildings. The new facilities will physically connect Sahlgrenska University Hospital with the University of Gothenburg's Sahlgrenska Academy facilities, creating a shared campus where clinicians, researchers, students and industry partners can work side by side.
The project responds to a rapidly evolving healthcare landscape. As medicine becomes increasingly specialised and patient care more complex, collaboration across disciplines is essential. By bringing clinical practice, research and education into one integrated environment, Sahlgrenska Life will enable faster translation of scientific discoveries into clinical practice, encourage innovation, and strengthen collaboration between healthcare professionals, researchers, established companies and emerging life science businesses.
The new facilities will provide space for highly specialised healthcare, cutting-edge research laboratories, advanced educational environments and innovation hubs for both established companies and start-ups. Equipped with the latest technologies, they will support advances in areas such as artificial intelligence, digital health, precision medicine and genomics—creating new opportunities to improve diagnosis, treatment and patient outcomes.
Construction is now well underway, marking a significant milestone in the transformation of Sahlgrenska University Hospital. By creating a fully integrated life science campus, Sahlgrenska Life will strengthen Gothenburg's position as an international centre for healthcare innovation and help shape the future of medicine for generations to come.
