Professional registration and licensing

To practise a regulated healthcare profession in Sweden, you must hold the appropriate professional licence. In Sweden, 21 healthcare professions require registration or licensing, including doctors and nurses.

If you obtained your qualifications outside Sweden, you must apply for professional registration through the Swedish National Board of Health and Welfare before you can work in the Swedish healthcare system.

Residence and work permits

Citizens of EU/EEA countries have the right to reside and work in Sweden, provided they hold a valid passport or national identity card and meet the relevant requirements.

If you are a citizen of a country outside the EU/EEA, you will need both a residence permit and a work permit before taking up employment in Sweden.

Swedish language requirements

Healthcare professionals must demonstrate sufficient proficiency in Swedish. As a general rule, you will need documented Swedish language skills equivalent to the eligibility requirements for higher education in Sweden. This includes a pass in Swedish B, Swedish as a Second Language B, the TISUS examination, or an equivalent qualification at CEFR level C1.

For doctors qualified in another Nordic country, language requirements are assessed individually.
