Refer a patient

Sahlgrenska University Hospital receives patients from all over the world for treatment of complex conditions. As a healthcare provider, you can refer a patient for treatment, assessment or to get a second opinion from a specialist or one of our teams.

When a patient is being referred to us, we work in close collaboration with the referring team to ensure the best possible care. We keep you informed about the patient’s progress and treatment plan continuously. When the patient is back home, we provide you with the patient’s medical records to ensure continuity of care.

Send referral

Send your referral by email. Our patient coordinators will review it and contact you as soon as possible.

Please include the following information in your referral:

  • Whether the referral concerns one patient or a group of patients  
  • Brief medical history
  • Reason for referral  
  • Requested treatment or assessment
  • Payment guarantee
  • Contact details for the referring team (email and phone) 
  • Contact details for the patient and/or a relative (email and phone)

Review of referrals

When we review your referral we assess whether we have the capacity to offer care. If relevant, we may request additional documentation to support a thorough evaluation.

Please note that an initial review of a referral does not constitute a medical opinion, second opinion, or treatment plan. If a clinical team at Sahlgrenska University Hospital is engaged to assess a case, this will be treated as a service and may incur a cost. We may therefore charge certain requests, including referrals, assessments, and second opinions.

We will return to you as soon as possible after reviewing your request. Providing a timely response on whether we are able to accept the referral is our highest priority.

Sahlgrenska University Hospital has selected areas where we can already confirm capacity and readiness to receive international patients. At the same time,  all referrals are individually assessed.
