Ewa-Lena Bratt
As a child, Evelina Lystrand was treated for bone cancer at Queen Silvia Children’s Hospital. Today, she works there as a Registered Nurse – in the very place where she was once a patient.
Professor Ewa-Lena Bratt combines clinical practice, research and education to help shape the future of paediatric healthcare at The Queen Silvia Children’s Hospital.
After qualifying as a nurse, she began her career at the Paediatric Heart Centre and has remained committed to caring for children and families while building a distinguished academic career in nursing science. Today, she serves as Professor of Nursing, helping to connect research with everyday clinical practice.
Her work focuses on understanding the whole patient experience – addressing not only medical needs, but also the wider impact of illness on children and their families.
“Nursing is about seeing the whole person,” she says.
A key area of her research is the long-term wellbeing of children who survive serious illness. She is particularly interested in how healthcare services can support young people as they transition from paediatric to adult care, ensuring continuity and the best possible quality of life.
Despite her role as a professor, direct patient care remains central to her work.
“I need my clinical dose. I love being a nurse.”
At The Queen Silvia Children’s Hospital, highly specialised care, research and education work together to advance paediatric healthcare and improve outcomes for children and families. By combining scientific knowledge with compassionate care, the hospital continues to develop new ways of supporting children throughout their healthcare journey.
When expertise and human connection come together, they create the foundation for trust, recovery and a brighter future.
