We want you to feel well cared for and safe during your stay with us. Find general information to help you before and during your stay at the hospital.

We are nationally designated to provide highly specialised care in the investigation and surgical treatment of difficult-to-treat epilepsy. We are also the only centre in Sweden performing rare epilepsy procedures such as hemispherectomy, corpus callosotomy and surgery for hypothalamic hamartomas. We treat both adults and children from across Sweden and internationally.

Our highly specialised epilepsy team brings together experts from a range of disciplines, including adult and paediatric neurologists specialising in epilepsy, epilepsy nurses, neuropsychologists, neurosurgeons with extensive experience in epilepsy surgery, clinical neurophysiologists and neuroradiologists.

We also work closely with specialists in genetics, clinical physiology and neurometabolic disorders. In addition, our patients have access to physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists, dietitians and counsellors who specialise in supporting people with epilepsy.

Family-centred care for children

When a child has severe epilepsy or requires advanced neurosurgery, treatment demands both highly specialised expertise and great care. At Sahlgrenska University Hospital, families are supported by an experienced team where advanced technology and compassionate care go hand in hand.

As a national centre for advanced epilepsy surgery, we receive referrals from across Sweden and internationally. Our multidisciplinary teams include neurologists, neurosurgeons and other specialists who work together to carefully assess each child and identify the most appropriate treatment.

Using modern techniques such as stereoelectroencephalography (stereo-EEG) and precision-guided laser therapy, we can in many cases treat epilepsy in a less invasive way than was previously possible. For children, this may mean fewer seizures and improved opportunities for development, learning and everyday life.

Every treatment decision is made on an individual basis, with careful consideration of both potential benefits and risks. We provide long-term follow-up and place great emphasis on continuity of care throughout a child’s treatment journey.

For families, living with severe epilepsy can be overwhelming. That is why clear communication, accessibility and ongoing support are integral parts of our care.

At Sahlgrenska University Hospital, advanced neurosurgery is combined with a strong commitment to compassionate, family-centred care. When children and their families feel safe and supported, the best possible conditions are created for recovery, development and quality of life.
