Environment policy

All work within Region Västra Götaland's organisations must promote health and contribute to sustainable development. The environment policy at Region Västra Götaland forms the basis of all environmental activities in the region.

Work with healthcare and research at the Sahlgrenska University Hospital (SU) is of great benefit to society but also has a negative impact on the environment. For example, our activities result in the emission of climate gases into the atmosphere and the release of chemical residues and pharmaceutical products into waste water. There is much transport of materials to and from our hospitals every day and we use large amounts of resources in the form of energy, water and disposable products.

We strive to reduce our negative impact on the environment as much as we can in accordance with the environmental policy of Region Västra Götaland. What this means in concrete terms for hospital activities is described in our environmental policy documents.

In order to achieve the goals of the environmental policy, Region Västra Götaland has developed an Environment Programme.  The environment programme is divided into seven priority areas: Transport, Energy, Products and Waste, Food, Chemicals, Pharmaceuticals and Nitrous Oxide. Under each target area, necessary measures to achieve the targets are listed as well as the councils and boards who have main responsibility for implementing the measures. The effects of the measures related to the environment, health and finance are described for each target.
